Surgery for diabetes

Surgery for diabetes

The surgery for diabetes is a group of surgical procedures performed to improve the control of type 2 diabetes in patients who do not respond adequately to other conventional treatments, such as lifestyle changes, oral medications and insulin injections.

There are several types of diabetes surgery, but the two most common are:

  • Gastric bypass surgery: In this procedure, a smaller gastric pouch is created to limit the amount of food that can be eaten. It is then connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing much of the stomach and duodenum. This not only reduces the capacity of the stomach, but also affects the way the body absorbs nutrients. Gastric bypass has been shown to significantly improve the control of type 2 diabetes in many patients.

  • Gastric sleeve surgery: In this procedure, approximately 80% of the stomach is removed, creating a smaller tube shape. This reduces the capacity of the stomach and may also affect hormones related to appetite and metabolism. Gastric sleeve surgery has also been shown to be effective in improving type 2 diabetes control and weight loss.

It is important to note that surgery for diabetes is not an option for all patients and is reserved for those with a high body mass index (BMI) and who have failed to control their diabetes with other treatments. In addition, these procedures carry risks and should be discussed in detail with our specialized medical team.
